My clients, who were relocating from Maine, wanted to add a basement-level master bedroom and bath and several levels of outdoor living space. They also wanted to restore the original house and to replicate its character in the new spaces while, at the same time, creating open and naturally illuminated interiors. My design had to address below-grade drainage and provide direct access to a sunken patio. We also added a rooftop sun deck that uses an innovative roofing/decking system and an adjustable solar-operated louvered sun screen on the south and west sides of the house to mitigate afternoon heat build-up.
